Board Chair

W. Spencer McClelland, MD, FACOG

W. Spencer McClelland, MD, FACOG is Board Chair of the Colorado Perinatal Care Quality Collaborative. He joined the organization in 2022 as a member of the Board of Directors and to contribute his passion and expertise in vaginal birth to support SOAR, CPCQC’s statewide initiative to reduce primary Cesarean births. As a board leader, he has partnered closely with CPCQC CEO Rebecca Alderfer to help guide the organization through a period of significant growth and transformation.  This included development of the strategic plan that positioned CPCQC for the passage and implementation of Senate Bill 24-175, legislation that accelerated the organization’s potential to drive statewide change.  He has also played an active role in expanding and diversifying the board in order to more comprehensively support the organization and its staff in improving the experience of Colorado’s birthing families.

Dr. McClelland is a board-certified obstetrician-gynecologist at Denver Health, where he serves as Associate Chief Medical Information Officer for Ambulatory Care, Medical Director of the Reproductive Choice Clinic, and a member of the hospital’s Biomedical Ethics Committee. He is also an Associate Professor of Clinical Practice at the University of Colorado School of Medicine. His clinical interests include high-risk obstetrics and reproductive health, while his informatics work focuses on helping clinicians provide safer, more efficient, and more patient-centered care through the thoughtful application of technology. A recipient of multiple teaching and mentorship awards, he is passionate about helping learners embrace the ambiguity and competing values that often lie at the heart of practicing in our healthcare system. As a native New Yorker who now lives in Denver with his wife and children, he balances his professional interests with the joys of raising kids who understand both the superiority of Colorado weather and lifestyle and the inferiority of its pizza and bagels.
