Family Integration to ReStore Trust (FIRST)

FIRST was developed out of a clear understanding that meaningful improvements in perinatal health outcomes are not possible unless initiatives are developed and overseen by the patients from communities whose health we strive to improve.

FIRST is a two-phase, community-focused effort to first train, then integrate patients and families from diverse backgrounds into leadership committees and workgroups within CPCQC. The program is focused on community-led solutions that ensure patients are active members of the care team and collaborative partners in our work in addition to creating a safe space for patients to engage with healthcare providers, and in turn, support providers in building trusted relationships with families and communities.

Phase one offers capacity building training for participating staff, providers, and patients/family Champions. Phase two empowers patients and family members who have completed training to choose to participate in one or more family integration services, including:

  • Serving on a committee to advise and inform the decisions and direction of our organization’s programs;
  • Serving on the CPCQC Board of Directors to guide the overall strategic vision of our organization and inform its mission, vision, and values;
  • Providing education to Colorado healthcare facilities’ quality improvement teams on how to effectively engage with pregnant and postpartum people, families with lived experience, and the communities they represent; and
  • Offering direct peer-to-peer support.

Community Impact

  • In partnership with the Alliance for Innovation on Maternal Health and MoMMA’s Voices, in 2022 CPCQC completed its first year of lived experience integration to build capacity and inform our quality improvement and advocacy initiatives.
  • The program engaged 18 patient-family and provider partners in the 2021-2022 and 2022-2023 cohorts.
  • For the 2023-2024 cohort, 8 FIRST Champions have been trained in QI education and advocacy.

Program Partners

CPCQC partners with MoMMA’s Voices to deliver comprehensive, ongoing training to our FIRST Champions. MoMMA’s Voices provides a Patient Family Partner Certification Course that includes advocacy training and quality improvement education, as well as opportunities for further learning in specialty areas of patient engagement.
